Half Meal, Extra Meal & Guest Meals: How Units Really Work
The complete guide to meal-unit math — how half meals, extras and guest meals change the rate, worked tables for every edge case, and the conventions your mess should agree on once.
Full meals are easy — one plate, one unit. The arguments start with the edge cases: is breakfast a half? Does a guest meal count as one unit or two? What does “extra” mean when someone takes a second helping of rice only? This guide settles every one of those cases with real numbers, so your mess agrees once and never re-litigates at month-end.

Mess accounting measures food consumed, not events. A member who eats a light breakfast and a full dinner consumed less than one who ate three full plates — so each person's count is a sum of fractional units:
| Entry | Units | Cost at ৳40/unit |
|---|---|---|
| Full meal | 1.0 | 40 |
| Half meal | 0.5 | 20 |
| Extra / guest meal | 1.0 | 40 |
| Missed meal | 0 | 0 |
The half meal: what it's for
Half meals exist for meals that genuinely cost about half a full plate: a breakfast of ruti and dal while lunch is rice, fish and meat. The standard pattern in Bangladeshi messes:
- Breakfast = half, lunch = full, dinner = full → 2.5 units/day
- Breakfast = half, lunch skipped (office canteen), dinner full → 1.5 units/day
- Weekend “heavy breakfast” (khichuri, bhuna) — many messes count it full; agree once.
The multiplier effect matters: a member who halves breakfast all month saves 15 units (30 days × 0.5) — ৳600 at a ৳40 rate. That's why light eaters defend the half meal passionately, and why heavy eaters should never be the only one holding the pen.
Extra & guest meals: the forgotten units
An extra is any food beyond a member's own logged meals: a cousin's lunch, a friend's dinner, or a genuine second helping. The rule is one line: every plate of food that leaves the kitchen is exactly 1 unit, attributed to the host/member who caused it.
| Scenario | Total units | Rate | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| No guests (base month) | 440 | 40.00 | — |
| Rafiq hosts 3 guest lunches | 443 | 39.73 | Everyone's rate drops slightly; Rafiq pays 120 more |
| Jahid's 2 dinner guests uncounted | 438 counted | 40.18 vs true 40.00 | Every member overpays; mess total off by ৳80 |
Read the third row carefully: an uncounted guest meal doesn't cheat the host — it cheats everyone equally, because the same bazaar gets divided among fewer units. This is why guest meals must be logged the same day, while the plates are still wet.
“I'll add it at month-end” never works
Guest meals remembered on the 30th are half-remembered. Log extras the same day with a count — MessMeal's Extra stepper exists for exactly this (tap +1 per plate, it multiplies by the live rate).
Worked month: everyone's edge case at once
| Member | Fulls | Halves | Extras (guest) | Units | Cost @ ৳40.46 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rafiq | 87 | 0 | 3 | 90.0 | 3,641 |
| Sabbir | 45 | 80 | 0 | 85.0 | 3,439 |
| Tanvir | 90 | 4 | 0 | 92.0 | 3,722 |
| Imran | 48 | 60 | 0 | 78.0 | 3,156 |
| Jahid | 72 | 20 | 0 | 82.0 | 3,318 |
| Total | 427.0 | 17,276 + rounding ≈ 17,600 base |
Sabbir skips lunch daily (45 fulls + 80 half-breakfasts/dinners) yet pays a fair share; Jahid's skipped breakfasts save him real money; Rafiq's three guest lunches cost him ৳121 while slightly lowering everyone else's rate. Fractional units make all of this exact — no side deals needed.
The conventions to agree on once
- Is breakfast half or full in our mess? (Pick one, write it down.)
- Do weekend heavy breakfasts count as full?
- Guest meal = 1 unit always, or 2 for a “double portion”? (1 is standard.)
- Extra second helpings: free (priced into everyone's rate) or 0.5 unit each? (Free is simpler.)
- Who logs a guest meal when the host forgets — the cook or the manager?
In MessMeal the whole system is built in: every meal cell cycles empty → Full → Half → empty, the Extra stepper adds guest plates per person, and all of it feeds the pooled rate instantly — half meals at 0.5, extras at 1.0, no configuration and no arguments. Try it free for a month.
